ANCIENT SOUL
WRAPPED IN A YOUNG MIND ________________ Flynn Cornelius Gascoigne was born as the first son of Edith and Arthur Gascoigne, the lady and lordship of the Gascoigne Manor. As a firstborn son, he was meant to be perfect from the start. There was no reason for other children, he could carry on the legacy of the bloodline perfectly well. The parents had no wish for another child, especially not a girl, so receiving a boy as their first was simply a blessing. It was no surprise to most, gaining a son was preferred in their circle of friends and family, still caught up in old centuries long forgotten by the general public. They were on top, their names present on the long list of heirs to the throne, even if their names were so far down that it was of little importance, but they were there. Their motives were different, though: A son meant a break from the curse. For centuries, the female side of the family had been laid under a curse, at least that was how it was told to him. His mother, the heir of the manor, was the oldest of three girls, and she, like those before her, had the curse and just the fact that she was still alive was a surprise considering the history of those before her. Most had been institutionalised and if not, they had taken matters into their own hands. There were stories of pasts long forgotten where these women had been treasured, revered as sacred beings, their curse seen as a gift, used by kings and peasants alike. As time went on and the linage was split across the continent, the gift carried on, but the tradition and knowledge was lost. Inevitably, the gift turned into a curse, but it was only carried by the women. With the birth of Flynn, it would either skip a generation or maybe even stop completely. But fate cannot be tested nor beaten. At the age of 5, he had his first vision, at least that he could tell off, that he voiced for his parents. He didn't get it himself, but they instantly understood that what they had hoped and aimed for had failed. The curse had passed on, even if he was a boy and there was nothing to do about it. His mother could barely bear it on her own and while having someone to share it with should make the burden lighter, she simply grew bitter. She felt guilty and in the progress it strained their relationship. His father was always emotionally distant and it didn't necessarily help that his son could see right through him, but he would never be certain if he did; or if he would understand it if he saw anything. This left Flynn without much guidance, but nonetheless he was raised as the lordship's son, the heir with the grand last name, in a family where feelings, thoughts, and troubles are not discussed. Flynn could do nothing but accept fate, being an unwilling participant, somehow managing through it on his own. At least, most would stay away from him naturally: He gave off a vibe that just told people to back off, a classic son of a lord, better than anyone and everyone simply because of his parents. Of course, this could be nothing farther from the truth, but he accepted it, since it meant that people would stay away from him: and when people stayed away, it felt like he saw less. Flynn grew up. He had to. He somehow had to keep himself together and he did. He built up a facade that would ensure himself and his own sanity, even if he had to do that on his own. He had the whole world for himself at his home, shunning any servant from his room, even when his mother from time to time tried to finally step up as a parent, but it was already too late. He would go on with his life as it had been determined, to become the lord of the manor and let the bloodline die out with him, just like his parents should have done before him instead of putting him into the world. Not that he is sad about it; he is rather calm and cool, which is probably the scariest part. He has seen parts of the future and that does something to you. He has no rush, no need for riches or praise, he simply does what he wants. Of course, this means that he to a certain degree follow fate, picking a degree, even such as a top university as Oxford, something expected by someone of his status, all while dealing with an ability labelled a curse decades, even centuries before his birth. At least he has stopped caring by now. |
○ D I S T A N T
adj. | dis·tant Having or showing a lack of friendliness or interest in others. Flynn comes off as extremely arrogant due to his distance to others. It is something that he actively keeps up, this distance and seemingly lack of interest in others. He does it for himself and everyone else, though, as it simply makes life easier. He doesn't want to have interest in others, he doesn't want to ruin it for either himself or others. If he's perceived as arrogant because of that, he'll take it, any time. He enjoys being alone, he enjoys solitude, and he prefers to keep it that way. |
○ O L D
adj. | old Being of advanced years and especially past middle age. Flynn is, of course, not old. He is, to many, a mere child, but even looking him in the eye is like looking into a soul much older than his physical being. What he has seen, what he can do has made him age to a point where he's beyond the others his age. It's not so much that he's wiser, he's simply more tried and tested. He has come to terms with a lot already, even that which someone his age should never have to accept, especially not look in the eye. He is tired, he is done, he is more than prepared and that makes him old. |
○ C A R E F R E E
adj. | care·free Having or showing freedom from worries or troubles. Flynn carries very few worries in life. How could he, when worries seem pointless? This only adds to his perceived arrogance as he does seem to care very little about other people as well when they manage to get past the distance that he keeps. It also means that he cares little about consequences, not only of his own, but others' actions as well, only pushing him further away from others. He would be the perfect criminal, if he didn't have that small ounce of just in him, which he somehow has. He wants to be fair, he wants to care, but he has not found anything to remotely care about so far, at least besides staying away from people. It is probably also this carefree trait that has drawn him to smoking in the first place, if it happens that he gets ill, well, it will happen no matter what, won't it? So why not live a little (even if he is fully aware that the life he is living is not worth much). |
○ I N T E L L I G E N T
adj. | in·tel·li·gent having or indicating a high or satisfactory degree of intelligence and mental capacity. Flynn is rather intelligent, at least to a degree that his fellow philosophy class students absolutely hate him. He is horribly annoying in that sense and has been referred to as an Aristotle-esque character, always questioning the others' questions and beliefs. He does have a way with words and thoughts, maybe due to the fact that he was often alone with only that. His parents did do their utmost to raise him to become an intelligent man, which is one of the few things that they have actually given him of which he is quite happy. He enjoys logics and puzzles, as they are more straightforward than people and what goes on around him. He is an observer, someone who questions, but also someone who is not too worried about the outcome of his own questioning. |
|PROPHECY|
Flynn possesses the ability of prophecy, the ability to see the future. Even as it's inherited, it is still a difficult one to carry, not having been diluted through the centuries. While most need objects to see glimpses of the future, so called divination, Flynn doesn't need that. He can: by the mere touch, he can see through objects, past and future. Most of the time, his eye is opened when he touches or gets close to others, eye contact is sometimes all he needs. It's not always clear what or why he sees something and most of the time he has no control over the visions. They happen when they happen, but there are definitely methods that boost them. As with prophecies, they're not always clear. Sometimes, it's perfectly clear, but neither fate nor the future is completely certain. Most of the time, they come in flashes and he can do whatever he wants to try and decipher them, something he both hates and enjoys. He can sit down with you, grab your hand, and he might see something, but it's not a science. Objects can make it easier, but it's not like he's a dog who can sniff his way to a missing person. It might be visions of the near future, might be of an unknown time far, far away. One thing, though, that he often experiences is sudden flashes of events that happens within seconds, almost as a sixth sense, a warning before danger occurs. He remembers all visions, but he has had times where it feels like he wakes up, as if he closes down when experiencing a prophecy. He has fainted before, suddenly waking up, even hurting himself in the process. There are no warning signs for when it happens, so in theory it can happen any moment. He might get eye contact with someone and simply fall over. He has visions of the future yet to happen that he can only wait to either come true or pass, but he agrees that this is not a gift, only a curse. |
